Why we're a match for EE

Our mission is to contribute with our work to creating positive social impact. For this reason we work with institutions, NGOs and organizations whose causes we connect with and wish to support.

We are skilled in helping our clients amplify their message, and we believe this skill comes with a responsibility to carefully choose and craft these messages. Our values are fully aligned with EE, and we know social media done well can go a long way in terms of empowering and mobilizing people.

Because of our multidisciplinary approach we are able to offer bespoke and versatile solutions to different situations; we are used to remote collaborations, have a good sense of humour, and we take deadlines very seriously.

Values and social issues we are passionate about

We have been involved with projects at the intersection of art/design and the socially aware since the beginning, whether that was personal scale innovation for environmental improvement of quality of life into the city, redevelopment of industrial areas through creation of space for creative entrepreneurs, exploring the future impact of in vitro meat on our planet as well as on our culture, or imagining reaching a more tolerant and fair society through gaming.

Because of the responsibilities we hold as culture producers and our personal outlook on society, we feel we are often confronted with complex questions in our field.

We strive to stay informed in terms of contemporary social and political critiques, and follow closely the work of outspoken intellectuals and activists, especially when they happen to be part of marginalised groups.

We seek to get to a more nuanced reading of contexts and situations, rather than settling with the official narrative; hence we care about inclusivity -in terms of race, gender, dis/ability, religion, sexual orientation or age. This said, the climate crisis is  a subject none of us can ignore at the moment.

We do our best to be sensitive about themes such as (visual) representation, but most importantly we learnt to be aware of the limits of our Western culture, especially in situations of co-creation with partners around the globe.

A Project we are proud of having participated in

Yemeni serious games

GIZ Germany commissioned a total of 7 serious mobile games as a vehicle to reach the youth in Yemen, sealed off to NGOs' reach since the 2015-present conflict.

Each application funnels different positive messages such as overcoming tribal conflict, encourage disarmament and support female empowerment.

The ongoing project, currently spanning 4 years, is being developed in close co-creation with the consultancy team in Sana'a, whom we keep daily contact with. Our responsibilities range from the co-creation of the game design documents, to animation and UI design.

Local Yemeni artists handled illustration and sound design, guaranteeing the relevance of the project.

Work

A few tidbits of our work that might be relevant to EE: Motion graphics, Illustration, Infographics and Editorial design. For the whole picture please visit our website.

Motion Graphics

Very often in our graphic design work we use movement to better communicate ideas or to add flavour to otherwise static visual elements such as icons.

In the above examples, we designed and animated a series of icons for a client's website and we created a playful message about the importance of good editorial design.

We animated all the characters and effects for 6 Yemeni serious mobile games. Here you can see a sample of the character's animations that went into the game.

Even though game animation has different requirements than animation for video, the general principles of movement and the techniques used are the same.

Illustration

Through the editorial illustration work we do for major Dutch newspaper De Volskrant, as well as for independent projects, we aim to contribute to creating a more progressive, open-minded, and forward thinking culture. Our intention is to support and add nuance to important stories using contemporary sensitivities and discourse, and get to a deeper reading of our society and the narratives we uphold through stereotype-questioning visuals.

Above is a mix of our editorial and personal work, encompassing different styles. The subjects include authorship on contemporary issues as well as portraits of iconic women politicians, writers, activists and philosophers such as Ilhan Omar, Carola Rackete, Roxane Gay, Alaa Salah, Malala Yousafzai, and Simone de Beauvoir.

Below is an animated illustration we created to reflect on the tragedy of colonization in Brasil, inspired by the story of the Curumim sculpture in the Lagoa of Rio de Janeiro.

Testimonials

Leni Kinzli
Office Manager,
UNU Office at the United Nations in New York

Working with Bomburo was an absolute pleasure.
They were incredibly professional and efficient and were able to take our ideas and translate them into concrete design outputs.

Moreover, they were very flexible in incorporating our feedback on an earlier version of the design and were able to turn around a product incredibly quickly. Their expertise in design greatly contributed to the excellent work they did.

We would highly recommend working with them.

Bomburo was able to seamlessly take data and turn it into digestible and informative infographics. This is a testament to their ability to turn complex ideas and concepts into creative digital assets.

They were completely professional, reliable, and flexible. I would definitely like to work with them again in future.
